Honor Our Vets, Not Just On Memorial Day
Memorial Day is right around the corner… the big weekend, which is the unofficial start to summer for a lot of people, is less than 2 weeks away. If we’re not careful, we will forget the true spirit of the holiday, which is to honor our servicemen and women that have been lost while keeping our country safe! Here are a few events that evoke the true meaning of Memorial Day, before the holiday weekend!
1. The 2nd Annual Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day will take place on Saturday, May 19th from 11:00am until 6pm. This celebration, at Veterans Park in Shelton (directions here), will feature live bands, a custom car & motorcycle show, and plenty of food! Our own MyTV9 Star, Brittany Decker, will make an appearance, too!
Bring your lawnchair and enjoy the day. Our vets will be honored, but everyone is welcome at this celebration. And to make it even better, admission is free!
2. The Woodbridge Ave Honor Roll is a monument honoring local veterans who we’ve lost along the way. It is a touching and important tribute to soldiers in the Valley area, and this Sunday, May 20th, they’re holding their 68th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony to draw attention to local vets and their sacrifices. That’s right… they’ve been doing this for nearly 70 years, basically since World War II ended! The Honor Roll committee believes that this service is very unique; in fact, it might be the only Memorial Day service held on-site at a Veterans Memorial in the whole country. Here’s the site:
This year’s service will be especially important, as the ceremony will include the dedication of 2 new plaques on the monument. Sadly, these plaques are replacements of 2 that were stolen for scrap metal late last year. It will be a triumphant moment when the new plaques are dedicated!
3. The employees of Paradigm Healthcare in Norwalk are taking time out of their busy schedules to pay tribute at their own ceremony, Honoring Veterans, on Tuesday, May 22nd. The program will include a poem read by Norwalk Mayor Richard Moccia, a parade of colors from Brien McMahon High School’s ROTC program (pictured below), and a performance of God Bless America.
There will also be a moving Presentation of Flowers and Certificates, after which the flowers will be taken to a local cemetery to be laid at the gravesites of fallen Veterans. It’s nice to see an example of corporate America doing their part to honor our soldiers!
4. And, here’s a very unique tribute to our servicemen and women… the senior class of Our Lady of Mercy School is presenting Kilroy Was Here, a play about the “G.I. Joes and Jills” of World War II. The three performances will take place at the school (directions here), and are at 7:00pm on Friday, May 18th and Saturday, May 19th, with a 2:00pm matinee on Sunday, May 20th. The Sunday performance will include a special tribute to active and retired members of our Armed Forces.
